Governor Blunt has stated to the press that he intends to limit the work of the special legislative session to action on parental consent and regulation of abortion clinics.

The Missouri Catholic Conference is urging the governor to call for passage of a more comprehensive anti-abortion bill. Provisions the MCC believes should be addressed include the following items:

• Enacting an explicit prohibition against using taxpayer money to fund abortion activities;

• Establishing in state law the Alternatives to Abortion program (currently the legislature funds the program but it has no formal statutory basis);

• Creating a tax credit for businesses and individuals who contribute to alternative to abortion agencies like Birthright;

The MCC is calling on all Missouri Catholics to contact Govenor Matt Blunt and urge him to broaden his special session call so that it allows for passage of an omnibus anti-abortion bill that includes all of the aforementioned items.

With the governor’s leadership, the legislature, which is controlled by members of his own party, can take up and pass an omnibus bill that puts into state law strong anti-abortion laws.

The question to ask the governor is “why not?” Why not pass these provisions? What are we waiting for?

Missouri can once again become a national leader in efforts to create a culture of life. Now is a golden opportunity to move toward that goal.

There is still time for the governor to revise his thinking and move toward an omnibus anti-abortion bill. Missouri citizens can help in this regard by letting Governor Matt Blunt know how important it is to them to take strong action on pro-life concerns.
