Human Cloning Bill Authorizes Human Cloning for Research
April 4, 2006, JEFFERSON CITY, MO – Legislation introduced by 24 state representatives purports to ban human cloning but in fact authorizes human cloning for research. HB 2024 allows the cloning of human embryos for medical research while redefining “human cloning” to mean the implantation of a cloned embryo into a woman’s uterus for the purpose of bringing to birth a live child.
HB 2024 rolls forward its definition of human cloning so the definition does not apply to when scientists acknowledge human life begins – as a single cell embryo or zygote – but when the developing human embryo is implanted inside of the mother’s womb.
The bill does not protect as human beings human embryos not implanted in a woman’s womb for the purpose of bringing to birth a live child.
“Citizens need to be aware of the deceptive nature of HB 2024,” said Deacon Larry Weber, Executive Director of the Missouri Catholic Conference. “The legislation falsely claims to ban human cloning when in fact it redefines human cloning. Proponents of human cloning seek to allow the cloning of human beings for research but hide their intentions by claiming to ban cloning to bring live babies to birth. Voters need to contact the sponsors of this cloning bill and let them know that the public is not pleased about the misleading nature of HB 2024.”
