On November 7, 2006 Missouri voters passed Amendment 2 by the narrow margin of 51% to 49%. The amendment gives a constitutional right to the bio-tech industry to clone and kill human embryos in the name of scientific research and medical experiments.

Missouri voters were subjected to a $35 million dollar marketing campaign funded almost entirely by one couple whose biotech company could receive substantial tax dollars from a state budget that already struggles to meet the needs of Missouri citizens. This campaign redefined accepted scientific definitions and promoted emotions over facts. This deceptive campaign:

• Claimed that Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer (SCNT) was not cloning when in fact this is the process used to clone animals including Dolly the Sheep,

• Led many voters to believe they were voting to ban the cloning of human embryos, when in fact therapeutic cloning (cloning for research purposes) was enshrined in the Missouri constitution,

• Created false fears that access to cures and therapies would be denied,

• Discounted the risk to women posed by harvesting the enormous number of eggs needed for the proposed research,

• Neglected to note that the Missouri legislature would lose its properly delegated authority to oversee the use of taxpayer dollars.

Missouri citizens are urged to come to Jefferson City to urge their elected officials to pass a true ban on all forms of human cloning including Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer. The media and legislators need to see that the people of Missouri support a true ban on all human cloning.
