The Little Sisters of the Poor has issued a press release outlining their concern about the fines they will face for failing to comply with the HHS contraceptive mandate. The sisters, who have provided health care services to the indigent elderly in 30 different U.S. homes for the last 170 years, face an “unsustainable financial burden” if they refuse to comply with the HHS mandate. They also express concern for the broader erosion of religious liberty this mandate represents. The sisters have faced religious intolerance before in doing works of mercy in other nations. Their prayer is that they won’t have to add the U.S. to the list of such countries.
