On Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2012, Susamma Seeley, statewide director of disaster response for Catholic Charities of Missouri, went to Joplin to offer support to the Islamic Community after the loss of their mosque. Seeley works out of the offices of the Missouri Catholic Conference. Catholic Charities of Southern Missouri also offered support .
Seeley went to the site of the mosque and participated in a press conference with community members and also attended a community meeting.
Seeley was not only there in her professional capacity to encourage another faith community. She was friends with this community since her disaster work in Joplin last year. Seeley said, “I last visited the mosque in May, and it was as peaceful then as it was last year.” During the Joplin tornado response, the mosque was a hub of activity where Islamic community members participated in the relief. Seeley noted, “After a loss of this magnitude, there is much coordination to be done, but offering comfort to another is best done in person.”
