Committees Hear/Act on Pro-life Bills

This week, the Missouri House Ways and Means Committee heard testimony on HB 1288, sponsored by Rep. Kevin Engler (R-Farmington), which would extend the sunset date on the pregnancy resource center and maternity home tax credits. These credits allow those making donations to these organizations to claim a 50 percent state tax credit, allowing the centers to raise more money and provide greater care for women facing crisis pregnancies. The credits will expire in 2019 and 2020 unless reauthorized.

On the Senate side, the Senate Children and Families Committee heard SB 724, sponsored by Sen. David Sater (R-Cassville), which would make it unlawful to perform an abortion solely because of the unborn child’s sex, race, or because of a prenatal diagnosis of Down Syndrome.  The MCC testified in support of this bill, along with HB 1288.

Meanwhile, the House Children and Families Committee voted HB 1383, sponsored by Rep. Rocky Miller (R-Lake Ozark), “Do Pass.” HB 1383 would require the parent giving consent for a minor to have an abortion to notify the other custodial parent in writing of the upcoming procedure before the abortion could be performed. The House passed this bill last year, and it is expected to be passed by the House again this year. Its fate in the Senate, however, is uncertain.
