Ending Protections for Salvadorans “Heartbreaking”

On January 8, the Department of Homeland Security announced plans to terminate the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) now used by roughly 200,000 Salvadorans. Bishop Joe S. Vasquez of Austin, Texas, Chairman of the U.S. Bishops’ Migration Committee, said this decision would needlessly separate families, requiring many to return to El Salvador. He called for congressional action to find bipartisan, long-term legislation solution to address the issue.
