FEMA to Allow Churches to Apply for Disaster Relief

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced it will allow churches to apply for federal funding to rebuild after a natural disaster. The agency was sued this fall by several Texas churches for refusing to allow them to apply for emergency funds after Hurricane Harvey.

The ban on funding for Churches has always been argued as permissible, and even required under the First Amendment, which prohibits government establishing a religion. Legal challenges to FEMA’s decision are expected. We’ll keep you updated on these challenges as they arise.
