Food Stamp Assistance for Children in Jeopardy

The Missouri Senate is considering legislation (SB 561) that would take food stamps away from families when the parent(s) is/are not working. The bill, sponsored by Senator David Sater (R-Cassville), intends to encourage work by parents, but many children would likely lose their food assistance by the imposition of what is known as a “full family sanction.”

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly referred to as Food Stamps, serves over 350,000 households in Missouri. The Missouri Budget Project has assembled facts about SNAP as well as the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). See Food Assistance Fact Sheet for more, including the number of SNAP recipients in your county.
