Fruits of the Spirit Needed in Public Life

When emotions run high, public officials can become partisan and vindictive. In the Epistle to the Galatians (5: 19-21) St. Paul talks about the “works of the flesh,” which include hatreds, rivalry, jealousy and acts of selfishness. He contrasts the works of the flesh with the fruits of the Spirit, namely, “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” (Galatians 5:22-23) Pray that our elected officials will be showered with the fruits of the Spirit.
