Great Cathedrals: The Duomo of Florence

This week we visit Florence, Italy, home of Michelangelo’s David and the famed dome of the Cathedral of Florence. Construction of the “Duomo” began in 1296, but the dome was not started until 1420, when the contract to build it was awarded to designer Filippo Brunelleschi.  Upon its completion in 1436, the dome was not only the largest in the world at that time, but also an architectural marvel. The secrets behind Brunelleschi’s success are still a mystery today.

The Florence Cathedral is one of the most beautiful in the world, wrapped as it is by white, green, and pink marble. The interior is graced with painted works of the last judgment while the baptistry boasts beautiful mosaics and famous bronze doors. Visitors can climb the dome to capture a view of this great Italian city.
