It has been two weeks since the Missouri Senate sent the Missouri House SB 749, a bill that ensures that employers and employees are not forced to pay for abortion drugs, contraceptives and sterilization procedures in their health plans. But SB 749 has not even been referred to committee yet. In that same time period, House bills sent to the Senate have been referred to committee and had public hearings. What is going on here?
What is going on is that the insurance industry is trying to put the brakes on SB 749. They don’t want to write policies for people that will exclude abortion drugs, etc. They claim this will be too difficult, an administrative hassle. We are hearing that the bill will be referred to committee next week, but an outpouring of citizen support for SB 749 will ensure that the bill keeps moving.
