Over the last several weeks an interim legislative panel has been meeting to review the Missouri Criminal Code in an effort to rewrite or repeal duplicated and conflicting provisions.
Chaired by Sen. Jolie Justus (D-Kansas City), the committee will examine more than 700 sections of state law. The goal of the committee is to reorganize the criminal statutes in a more cohesive manner to better serve justice.
The interim committee was assisted by the Missouri Bar Criminal Law Committee that spent four years studying the criminal code and made various recommendations to the committee. The committee has until November 15th to submit a report to the General Assembly for action during the next legislative session.
The proposed revisions have had the support of prosecutors, judges and public defenders.
