One reason Planned Parenthood has orchestrated a campaign against SB 749 is the threat it poses to their strategy of making “reproductive technologies” part of the mainstream of health care and health insurance. The plan: just sneak “family planning” and abortion into health insurance plans, and it is paid for as if the government sent a reimbursement check. Check out this article about a recent study by the Guttmacher Institute.
SB 749 derails this agenda by requiring companies to tell customers if a proposed health plan will cover abortions, abortion drugs or contraceptives. If the customer wants to exclude and not pay for these items, they can do so under the provisions of SB 749. Sounds like “choice” to us, but Planned Parenthood only wants choice offered on their terms.
