Medicaid for Aged and Disabled Considered by Senate Committee

Senate Bill 582, sponsored by State Senator Scott Rupp (R-Wentzville), would raise the limit on assets allowed for the aged and disabled to qualify for Medicaid health coverage. At present, an individual’s assets may not exceed $1,000, while a couple’s assets may not exceed $2,000. The bill would raise the asset limit to $5,000 for an individual and $10,000 for a couple.

Senator Rupp noted that the asset limit had not been raised since the late 1960’s.  Passage of the legislation could help more of the elderly stay in their home rather than move into a nursing home.  The MCC testified in favor of the SB 582. Because of the late date of the committee hearing, passage of bill appears unlikely unless it is amended on to another bill debated on the Senate floor.
