Missouri Dioceses Offer to Make Priest Files Available and Cooperate with Attorney General

Following revelations of sexual abuse by priests and a cover-up by the hierarchy in a grand jury report from Pennsylvania, the Archdiocese of St. Louis has offered to make its files available to Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley for review. Soon thereafter, the Diocese of Jefferson City followed suit. The Dioceses of Kansas City/St. Joseph and Springfield/Cape Girardeau have also agreed to cooperate with the Attorney General in a review of their files. Archbishop Carlson held a press conference on Thursday, andBishop McKnight spoke with the media on Friday afternoon.

AG Hawley, for his part, has promised to investigate any crimes, publish a public report and refer any credible cases to prosecutors. The MCC asks our network members to pray for healing for all victims of sexual abuse by members of the Church and for a purification of the Church through this process. If you are Catholic and are struggling with what is happening, consider this short video clip from Bishop Robert Barron from some years back. It has much to say to us today.

If you have experienced abuse or have information relating to abuse by the Church, please contact your diocesan victim assistance coordinator. Contact information for all four Missouri dioceses can be found in last week’s edition of MCC Weekly Update.
