Despite pleas in April from the Missouri bishops to slow the pace of executions, the Missouri Supreme Court has set a June 9th execution date for Richard Strong. This will be the 15th execution in the last 19 months for Missouri and puts our state second, behind Texas, for executions in 2015.
Mr. Strong is responsible for the deaths of his girlfriend Eva Washington and her daughter, Zandrea Thomas. However, his woefully inadequate legal counsel failed to put on a meaningful defense during the crucial penalty phase of the trial. If the jury would have known about Strong’s background of extreme childhood poverty, physical and sexual abuse, and a strong history of mental illness, they may have recommended a sentence of life without parole instead of the death penalty.
Catholic teaching opposes the use of the death penalty because it disregards the sanctity of human life and continues the cycle of violence. Please contact Governor Nixon today at 573-751-3222 or by email and urge him to commute Richard Strong’s sentence based on his horrific background and mental illness.
