Oklahoma to Use Gas for Executions

Oklahoma officials announced this week that they would start using nitrogen gas to execute inmates when the state resumes executions. It would be the first time a state would use nitrogen gas to carry out capital punishment. The state legislature approved nitrogen gas inhalation as a back-up method of execution in 2015 after a series of botched executions forced the state to stop using lethal injection. Oklahoma and other states haven’t been able to acquire the drugs needed for lethal injection because of opposition from drugmakers to having their products used in executions.
