After years of talk but no action, Congressional leaders and the president are vowing to work on immigration legislation in 2013. In a press conference on Nov. 13, President Obama urged passage of legislation that would strengthen border security and create a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants already living in the United States. According to the president, such citizenship path should include the payment of back taxes and learning the English language. He also called for enactment of a Dream Act that would allow children brought to this country by parents without legal status to enroll in school and seek U.S. citizenship. Meanwhile in the wake of the president’s re-election, which included strong support from Latino voters, House Speaker John Boehner and other Republican leaders have said they, too, are prepared to work on a bi-partisan immigration reform bill.
