State legislators in both chambers have filed pro-life legislation specifically addressing issues uncovered during investigations this summer into the Planned Parenthood videos, and abortion in Missouri generally.
Senator Bob Onder (R-Lake St. Louis), and Rep. Kathy Swan (R-Cape Girardeau) have filed SB 644 and HB 1953, respectively. The bills would prohibit any mother or father from knowingly donating fetal organs or tissue resulting from an abortion. They would also require all fetal tissue from an abortion be sent for a pathology examination, rather than just a representative sample, as currently required.
The bills would further require the Missouri Department of Health to conduct annual inspections of abortion clinics, and also require any physician conducting abortions to have surgical and admitting privileges at a local hospital, clarifying current law that requires those physicians have just “clinical” privileges.
SB 644 is scheduled for a hearing next Tuesday in Jefferson City. We will be reporting on its progress as it makes it’s way through the legislative process in our weekly Capitol Updates-stay tuned!
