Norway is progressive in many ways. Perhaps one of the ways it is most progressive is in its treatment of prisoners. Unlike the U.S. prison system, which is largely overcrowded with meager conditions, the prison system in Norway has many amenities as this video shows. The Norwegians believe that loss of freedom is enough of a punishment, and that if you treat someone with respect, they will mirror that behavior. The recidivism rate is 20 percent in Norway, versus 76 percent in the U.S.
Representatives of North Dakota visited the prison system in Norway in 2015, and have begun to implement some of their changes. Time will tell if other states follow North Dakota’s example.
