Once again this year, people had to leave their Thanksgiving meal to go to work. Some were nurses or doctors or other folks providing essential services that have to be maintained, even during a special holiday. But others went to work at retail stores to get ready for “Black Friday.” Does it really have to be this way? Why can’t these places close down for one day? Of course, business competition is fierce and few businesses want to “go it alone” and close when their rivals stay open. Maybe it is time to bring back what used to be called the “Blue Laws.” Or, are there other ways to convince businesses to shut their doors on at least Thanksgiving and Christmas?
