At the present time, the Missouri General Assembly is considering how to reform Medicaid and possibly expand it to cover more uninsured Missourians,
Medicaid provides health coverage to pregnant women, children, low-income parents, people with disabilities and the elderly. Even middle class families often rely on Medicaid when an elderly parent enters a nursing home and their life savings become depleted.
Catholic teaching declares that access to health care is a basic human right. However, this same teaching indicates that people have some responsibility for their own health care and the health care of their families. In seeking to uphold these principles, the Missouri Catholic Conference has supported legislation that will both reform and expand the Medicaid program.
