The Potosi Correction Center is investigating a staff member for the offense of “over-familiarity” because the staff member has pledged support for clemency efforts for John Winfield. The investigation came to light in court documents filed this week by Winfield’s attorneys.
According to court documents, the guard has worked for the DOC for more than 20 years. The guard describes Winfield as among the “elite one percent of all inmates.” The guard has supervised Winfield for years and attests to his superb work habits, his kindness to other prisoners and the high respect that he is regarded by staff and prisoners alike.
By being “investigated” the staff member is not allowed to engage in activities related to the “investigation” including clemency efforts for Winfield. Winfield’s attorneys are asking for a stay of execution to allow Mr. Winfield to seek clemency “fully, fairly, and unburdened by the state’s interference.”
