A+ offers scholarships for attendance at two-year community colleges and vocational schools. Currently the scholarships are only available for graduates of public high schools. The MCC pointed out the unfairness of this approach and noted that most other college scholarships are available to graduates of both public and private high schools. No action was taken on the legislation.
This week, the House Committee on Higher Education considered legislation that would expand the A+ college scholarship program to include graduates of private high schools, including Catholic schools. The MCC testified in support of HB 451, which is sponsored by State Representative Keith English (Independent – St. Louis). Opposition came from a representative of Missouri’s community colleges who said funding for A+ had been reduced and so adding more students would not be a good idea at this time.
