This week the MCC sent out an Action Alert to the MCC Citizens’ Network regarding the food stamp ban for ex-drug offenders. Missouri is just one of nine states that currently prohibits former drug users from receiving food stamps. Senate Bill 680, sponsored by Senator Kiki Curls (D-Kansas City), would lift the ban while still mandating certain requirements, such as participation in a drug treatment program. Senate Bill 680 has passed the Senate and now awaits assignment to a House Committee. The Action Alert asks network members to contact House Speaker Tim Jones and urge him to show leadership on SB 680 by quickly assigning it to a committee so the legislation may have a chance of passage before the end of session on May 16th.
