This week legislation that would prohibit job applications from requesting information about prior felony convictions passed the Senate Small Business, Insurance and Industry Committee. Known as “ban the box,” SB 44
is sponsored by Senator Jamilah Nasheed (D-St. Louis). Senate Bill 44 received a tied vote in the committee last week, which effectively stalled the bill. However, Senator Wayne Wallingford (R-Cape Girardeau), who voted against the bill last week, asked for the bill to be reconsidered and then provided the vote needed to move the bill forward.
Senate Bill 44 would “ban the box” on written applications for public jobs (city, county, state). The bill would not prevent employers from obtaining criminal background checks.
The MCC supports SB 44 because it supports restorative justice principles of helping restore the ex-offender back into society after they have been held accountable. Senate Bill 44 will now move to the Senate floor for consideration.
