Something special is happening in the north St. Louis County town of Kinloch, the oldest African-American city incorporated in Missouri. After years of neglect, a storied basketball court has been transformed into a bright and bold abstract painting, which has led Architectural Digest Magazine to name it the best-designed basketball court in the world. Reporter Erin Heffernan tells how the courts were built in 1972, played on by some great basketball players through the years, and then went into decline before being restored with the help of the nonprofit Project Backboard.
