In August, the Catholic Bishops of Missouri issued a statement opposing SB 656. Their statement, while recognizing the right to self-defense, noted that SB 656 was a “move in the wrong direction.” It encouraged citizens not to “fall prey to the notion that we are somehow safer as individuals and as a society if everyone is always and everywhere armed.”
In the weeks following the release of the statement, different news outlets included the Bishops’ opposition in their articles about SB 656. Several editorials opposing the bill, including one by Chief Sam Dotson of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, also cited the Catholic bishops’ position.
While people of good will may disagree on this bill, there is little doubt that the Catholic bishops were a powerful witness on this issue.
