|Federal District Judge Nanette Laughrey has awarded $156k in prevailing party attorney fees to Planned Parenthood of Mid-Missouri this week in a case involving their clinic in Columbia. Judge Laughrey had previously ruled that the state wrongfully withdrew Planned Parenthood’s ambulatory surgical center license after their abortionist lost her clinical privileges at the University hospital, leaving them without a person to perform abortions there.
The ruling is a huge disappointment, since Missouri law requires any practicing abortionist to have clinical hospital privileges within 30 miles of an abortion clinic. Without such privileges, the clinic cannot operate, and the State Department of Health properly acted to withdraw the license. A similar Texas law requiring admitting and surgical privileges for abortionists, however, was struck down in late June by the U.S. Supreme Court.
The Attorney General’s office is reviewing the ruling to decide whether to appeal.
