Governor Nixon Unveils Proposed State Budget

On Wednesday, Governor Nixon proposed a $26.1 billion operating state budget for fiscal year 2016. Some $8.8 billion of this proposed budget comes from state taxes and fees and is known as state general revenue. Most of the rest comes from the federal government but the Missouri General Assembly must formally appropriate these federal funds before they can be expended by the state. The governor’s proposed budget disappointed many legislators, including some Democrats. State Representative Margo McNeil (D-Florissant) could not understand why the governor had not proposed more for education. For his part, the governor believes that the growth in state general revenue will be too weak to make large increases in many  of the programs favored by legislators.
