On a positive note, this week Governor Nixon did sign two other pro-life bills, which the MCC supported this past session. Senate Bill 567, sponsored by Senator Maria Chappelle-Nadal (D-St. Louis), requires the Department of Health to transport donated cord blood from designated Missouri collection sites to a cord blood bank in St. Louis for processing and storage. Cord blood, which is taken from the umbilical cords of newborns at the time of birth, has been linked to numerous cures and provides an ethical means for physicians to treat those suffering from otherwise incurable diseases.
SB 716, sponsored by Senator Dan Brown (R-Rolla), and SB 754, sponsored by Senator David Sater (R-Cassville), both include the “Show-Me Healthy Babies” program, which provides insurance coverage for unborn children whose mothers don’t qualify for Medicaid or have access to health coverage through their employment. It is hoped that providing health coverage for these unborn children will encourage uninsured mothers to choose life rather than abortion.
