Legislative Session Underway

On Wednesday, January 7, the first session of the 98th General Assembly convened with the election of legislative leaders, the swearing in of legislators, and an evening ball in the Capitol Rotunda. In addition, each chamber adopted temporary rules to govern their daily business.

The Missouri Senate reelected Senator Tom Dempsey (R-St. Charles) to be the President Pro Tem of the Senate. The President Pro Tem is the chief legislative officer of the Senate and holds a number of powers, including the referral of bills to committees and ruling on points of order raised when disputes occur among legislators. The Missouri House elected State Representative John Diehl (R- Town and Country) as the new Speaker of the House.

Both leaders gave speeches (click Dempsey and Diehl to read) to their respective chambers touching on concerns they believe should be addressed during the session. In coming Winter Updates the MCC will highlight some of the bills that have been filed that may be of interest to MCC Network members.
