In the same week the disturbing Planned Parenthood videos were released, the Columbia location announced that it would begin performing medical abortions in August, and surgical abortions in January following its hiring of a new physician.
In light of this news, the reissuing of Columbia’s license is being challenged. There is a question as to whether the Columbia facility meets the requirements of an ambulatory surgical center, as required by Missouri law, to receive a license to perform surgical abortions. A committee of legislators chaired by Senator Kurt Schaefer (R-Columbia) is investigating the license as part of the overall investigation of the corporation. In the interim, Senator Schaefer has sent a letter to the Department of Health asking them to suspend the license until the investigation is complete. Read the letter and read more about the license investigation here.
