Wednesday, April 22, marked the 45th Earth Day celebration. Beginning as an environmental movement in the 70’s, Earth Day is now recognized worldwide and celebrates clean air, water, and land.
Earth Day is critically important to the current state of the environment because it engages people to support programs and builds activism around the world. More than a billion people participate in Earth Day events and campaigns every year.
Earth Day reminds even the most “green friendly” people of the year-round commitment that is needed to protect our earth. Recycling, reducing your carbon footprint, and eating local foods are all easy ways to help care for the earth. By making these changes in your daily routine, you can make every day Earth Day and ensure a bright environmental future for generations to come!
Read the poem below, by Thich Nhat Hanh, for inspiration to begin your journey to creating a beautiful and peaceful Earth.
Kiss the Earth
Walk and touch peace every moment.
Walk and touch happiness every moment.
Each step brings a fresh breeze.
Each step makes a flower bloom.
Kiss the Earth with your feet.
Bring the Earth your love and happiness.
The Earth will be safe
when we feel safe in ourselves.
