MCC Annual Assembly Workshop Spotlight: Mercy Meets the Refugee

To celebrate the 2016 Jubilee Year of Mercy, this year’s workshops will focus on the many ways mercy meets Catholics and non-Catholics throughout life and in the public policy arena. For this Update, we’re highlighting the “Mercy Meets the Refugee” workshop.

Recently, much fear and political angst has been aimed at individuals fleeing their war torn countries in search of a better life. While there are approximately 19.5 million refugees in the world today, less than one percent of the refugee population has resettled in the United States.  The Office of Refugee and Immigration Services of Catholic Charities of Central and Northern Missouri is a lead agency for helping those refugees who are resettling in our state.

This workshop will provide insights into who these individuals are, the life they left behind and the challenges they face in a new country. Alissa Shoemaker and Nicole Reamer, job developers with Refugee and Immigration Services, will share their first hand experiences of working with these individuals and how we can join them in welcoming these strangers to our country.
