The MCC testified this week in support of SB 40
, which would create a state earned income tax credit (EITC). The existing federal EITC helps many of the working poor to supplement their low wages. Senate Bill 40, sponsored by Senator Paul LeVota (D-Kansas City), would establish a state version of the EITC. A low-income wage earner could claim a state credit equal to 20% of the federal EITC. In testimony before the Senate Ways and Means Committee, the MCC said that SB 40 represented one way to promote the dignity of work and workers. “From the perspective of Catholic teaching, private property must be respected and businesses have a right to make a profit. At the same time, all work and workers must be respected and this includes ensuring a living wage.”
The committee took no action on the bill.
