The funding for the program comes from Missouri general revenue. Last year the Missouri General Assembly appropriated $2.1 million to the program. Unfortunately, Governor Nixon vetoed a $500,000 increase and withheld another $500,000, leaving the program $1 million short for fiscal year 2015. The MCC testified this week before the House General Administration Appropriation Committee to encourage them to appropriate the same $2.1 million for fiscal year 2016, the actions of the governor notwithstanding. Stay tuned for more.
This week the Missouri Catholic Conference testified in support of funding for the Alternatives to Abortion program. This program was started in 1997, and provides state funding for maternity homes and pregnancy resource centers that assist women facing crisis pregnancies. These organizations provide resources for mothers up to one year after birth, and assist them with education, parenting skills, and job placement, among other services.
