MCC Urges Welfare Program Meet Basic Human Needs

The Missouri Catholic Conference (MCC) joined with other organizations this week in urging Governor Grietens to revise laws and regulations governing Missouri’s primary assistance offered to the poor, the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program. The letter noted that: “When families cannot secure their basic human needs, they suffer and their children experience immediate negative effects that too often have life-long consequences.”

The letter stresses the need for a simplified application process, removing obstacles for the participation of two-parent families in TANF, and improving benefit levels to better reflect the needs of these very poor families.
