“Missouri Adoptee Rights Act” Passes General Assembly

A bill permitting adult adoptees to access their original birth certificate passed the Missouri General Assembly by a wide margin. The bill, sponsored byRep. Don Phillips (R-Kimberling City) permits adult adoptees, beginning in January 2018, to access their original birth certificate through the State Registrar’s Office.

The bill allows birth parents not wanting their names released to file a “Contact Preference Form” expressing their wishes not be contacted, protecting their confidentiality. If you or someone you know made an adoption plan, please make them aware of this change in the law. You can contact the MCC at 1-800-456-1679 if you have any questions about the Missouri Adoptee Right’s Act.
