Missouri Budget Basics

For a quick primer on the Missouri Budget, consider reviewing this brief slide show on the Missouri budget from the Missouri Budget Project. The Missouri budget for the current fiscal year is approximately $27 Billion. Approximately one-third of that amount is federal dollars that are used for specific purposes – like funding for Medicaid, TANF, and other programs for the poor and disabled. The second one-third is state revenue for specific purposes, like gas taxes used to build Missouri’s roads and infrastructure. The remaining one-third is “general revenue.” This is the money that lawmakers spend most their time arguing over for public schools, law enforcement, courts, agriculture, tourism, and other state priorities.
