This past week the state of Missouri executed Michael Worthington, making him the 7th person put to death since the beginning of 2014. The execution ties Missouri with Texas and Florida, states that also have carried out seven executions this year. With an execution date set for September 10 for Earl Ringo Jr., Missouri is continuing the pattern of an execution a month. With this accelerated rate of executions, Missouri could easily outpace Texas with the most executions this year. Is this an honor that Missouri really wants?
Catholic teaching opposes the use of the death penalty because it disregards the sanctity and dignity of human life and promotes violence as a solution to societal problems. Furthermore, research shows that the death penalty is arbitrary, unfairly applied, costly and prone to mistakes. Learn more about the death penalty by visiting the Death Penalty Information Center.
