Nationally, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2011 American Community Survey, 35.7% of births are to unmarried women. That same survey showed Missouri with an average non-marital birth rate of 37%. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services tracks non-martial birthrates by zip code; their latest statistics are from 2011. The Missouri Catholic Conference took this zip code information to determine the non-martial birthrate by county. Below is a map the MCC then prepared which gives an idea of how extensive non-marital births are in Missouri.
In coming Summer Updates we will explore this information in more depth, with special attention to how counties’ non-marital birth rates compare with their poverty rates, levels of educational attainment, and other demographic factors.
