New Refugee Order Issued

President Trump has issued a new executive order that suspends for 120 days any decisions or new applications for refugee status in the United States. In a statement the chairman of the U.S. Catholic bishops’ Committee on Migration said the order would put more innocent lives at risk. The Most Reverend Joe S. Vasquez, Bishop of Austin, Texas, noted that refugees already undergo a rigorous screening process before being legally admitted into the U.S. and concluded: “We have the ability to continue to assist the most vulnerable among us without sacrificing our values as Americans or the safety and security of our nation.” The new order will mean that Catholic Charities involved in resettling refugees will see a major reduction in the number of refugees they can help to resettle in the United States.
