Increasingly, child psychologists, neuroscientists, and educators stress the importance of a nurturing home environment for a child’s early learning. The teachings of the Catholic Church underscore this point:
The role of parents in education is of such importance that it is almost impossible to provide an adequate substitute. The right and the duty of parents to educate their children are primordial and inalienable. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, par. 2221)
Certainly, the Catholic Church recognizes the importance of more formal education and the many Catholic schools and preschools found throughout society bear testimony to the value the Church places on such schooling. However, parents start the learning process and then accompany their child on their journey of discovery.
