Pope Francis Appoints New Bishop to the Diocese of Jefferson City

On Tuesday last week, the Diocese of Jefferson City announced the appointment of Fr. Shawn McKnight of Wichita, Kansas, as Bishop-elect to the diocese. The diocese’s current bishop, Most Rev. John Gaydos, is retiring after serving as bishop of Jefferson City for 20 years. Bishop-elect McKnight will be installed on February 6th, 2018, at the Cathedral of St. Joseph.

Bishop-elect McKnight spoke at the press conference marking the announcement, stating that he has a special interest in youth programs, vocations, and the permanent Diaconate. He also looks forward to working with people of other faith traditions, particularly those of Jewish and Islamic faith.

Bishop-elect McKnight has served within the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops as executive director of the Secretariat for Clergy, Consecrated Life, and Vocations. It was in this capacity that he became acquainted with many bishops, including Archbishop Robert Carlson and Bishop John Gaydos. The Bishop-elect looks forward to working with the MCC as its general chairman. Please join the MCC in welcoming Bishop-elect Shawn McKnight to Missouri!
