Pope Francis On Inequality

Pope Francis is certainly no economist, nor does he pretend to be, but he does see the great gulf between the very rich and the very poor. In his apostolic exhortation On the Proclamation of the Gospel in Today’s World, the Holy Father offers no blueprint for addressing inequality but he does caution against relying solely on “the invisible hand of the market.” The Holy Father declares:

Growth in justice requires more than economic growth, while presupposing such growth; it requires decisions, programmers, mechanisms and processes specifically geared to a better distribution of income, the creation of sources of employment and an integral promotion of the poor which goes beyond a simply welfare mentality.
