Legislation to increase state awarded benevolent tax credits to pro-life and anti-poverty programs was Truly Agreed To and Finally Passed this week by the Missouri General Assembly. If signed into law by Governor Jay Nixon, SCS HB 1132, sponsored by Representative Kevin Engler (R-Farmington), will increase the overall cap on the tax credits people can claim when donating to pregnancy resource centers, maternity homes, and food pantries. The cap is increased by $500,000 for each tax credit.
With the new caps, up to $2.5 million in tax credits may be claimed by taxpayers when donating to pregnancy resource centers or maternity homes. Meanwhile, up to $1.75 million in tax credits can be claimed when donating to food pantries.
There are currently 18 maternity homes, 57 pregnancy resource centers, and countless food pantries across the state that will benefit from the increase. The Missouri Catholic Conference (MCC) worked diligently toward getting this legislation passed during this legislative session.
Many members of the MCC’s Citizens’ Network voiced support for the passage of SCS HB 1132 and we would like to extend our deepest appreciation! This legislation will save lives by providing women with alternatives to abortion and feeding families who are in need. Without your voice, the importance of these programs, and the need to expand them, may have gone unnoticed by members of the legislature. Thank You!!
