“Raise the Age” was added to SB 50 as an amendment in an attempt to get it over the finish line. Offered byRep. Nick Schroer (R-St. Charles), the amendment would raise the age to 18 for juveniles to stay in the juvenile justice system. Rep. Schroer pitched the amendment as a way to save youth from suicide (as they are 36 percent more likely to commit suicide in prison). The underlying bill, SB 50, is a health care directive bill so it had to be germane to the title.
Efforts to support “Raise the Age” have been mounting. Missouri is now only one of six states to still allow youth under the age of 18 to be tried as adults. The Missouri Catholic Conference is among the groups supporting the issue, and you can read more about it in our latest Messenger Online.
