This week the Missouri House amended and then approved Senate Bill 493, sponsored by Senator David Pearce (R-Warrensburg), that is intended to address problems besetting the unaccredited school districts of Normandy and Riverview Gardens, both in the St. Louis area. In addition to provisions aimed at improving education in these districts, the bill modifies the current law that allows students to transfer out of unaccredited school districts. As amended by the House, students would also be able to attend private nonsectarian schools in certain instances, if approved by local voters. As is often the case, the Senate did not agree with all of the changes made by the House so a conference committee of members representing both bodies now will likely consider SB 493. Stay tuned for more.
